Toothache Causes

Decay is the primary culprit for a toothache; however, there are several other reasons why you may feel pain in one or more of your teeth, including:

  • Gum disease
  • Bruxism, or tooth grinding
  • Trauma to a tooth
  • The eruption of a tooth, such as a wisdom tooth
  • An impacted tooth
  • An abnormal bite
  • Tooth sensitivity

Because toothaches can be the result of any of these conditions, having you complete oral examination to determine the exact cause is crucial.

Symptoms that Accompany a Toothache

Of course, the primary symptom associated with a toothache is pain in the mouth surrounding the affected tooth or teeth; however, there are several other symptoms that can present with a toothache, including:

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms along with your toothache, you should schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible to determine the cause of the problem and get the treatment that you need.

Self Care for a Toothache

Seeing as soon as possible it vital for diagnosing and treating a toothache; however, if you need immediate relief until you see your dentist, there are some things that you can do to relieve your pain:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm, salty water
  • Take an over-the-counter pain medication

How You Dentist can Help

Your dentist will perform a complete and thorough examination of your mouth. This will allow him to identify the location and the cause of the pain. The dentist will look for signs of swelling, redness and any damage to the tooth. X-rays may also be taken, which will show signs of tooth decay, or an impacted or damaged tooth.

Upon identifying the cause of a toothache, your dentist will determine the best treatment option for you. Treatment may include prescription antibiotics and pain medications, or you may need to have a procedure done to treat the cause of the pain, such as a root canal or a tooth extraction.

I recently was referred to Dr. Ericsson by my former Dentist. I had quite a few problems going on with my teeth and for years I didn't even want to smile anymore or have my picture taken .Dr. Ericsson took a few x-rays and in length explained what he recommended. Long story short, I agreed to a full mouth restoration! ( Especially after looking at his before and after photo album) Dr. Ericsson did an outstanding job! I constantly get compliments from my friends, strangers, and even my other Doctors. During the procedure Dr. Erickson and his wonderful staff were always so passionate and professional. Dr. Ericsson also worked out a payment plan with me over a time that was budget friendly for me. I Highly recommend Dr. Ericsson to everyone now ! Not only has this boosted my confidence and self esteem again, but its changed my life! Thank you Dr. Ericsson!!

The best Dentist ever. Broke a front tooth on Christmas Eve. Called Dr Mark at 8:30 at night. He answered the phone and told me to be in his office the next morning on Christmas Day! Who does that. Dr Mark does. He had a temp. front tooth in place in three hours. There is no one better Dentist out there.
